About Satsuma-tsuge
|
|
Satsuma-tsuge (also known as Tsuge) is high quality boxwood found in the Ibusuki area of Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan . Boxwood is easily shaped, hard, polished, and often used to craft combs. Furthermore, the wood allows paint to show up well, is not easily breakable, and develops into a distinct color with age. |
Shogi (Japanese chess) parts are made from Satsuma-tsuge. |
There are many boxwood combs in Japan that are made from imported boxwood as opposed to the few that are made from Satsuma-tsuge. Boxwood combs that do not use Satsuma-tsuge are usually labeled as Hon-tsuge.
There is great demand for these combs made from Satsuma-tsuge, despite them being priced higher than the average comb.
